Fold
Clay is the hardest material to make soft. It is rigid, brittle, still. In this series I push it toward its opposite: a fold caught mid-fall, never quite settling.
I use no fabric. Every fold comes from the memory of my hand not a cast of something, but the direct trace of my fingers. I work as if drawing, only in three dimensions instead of on paper.
What holds me is not the form but the light. Each fold collects a shadow; the ridges catch the light, the deep folds swallow it. The way pressing in darker tones deepens a drawing, here I don’t draw the shadow, I build it.
